Watching, Playing, Reading #8

It's back!  The semi-monthly-ish post series which I haven't written since July.  Whoops.

The only Christmas things I watched were the Christmas episode of Supernatural and The Night Before Christmas, which is actually a year-round movie.

Some of my favorite things I watched on Netflix were:

funny:

Jewtopia (you really need to have a good sense of humor to appreciate this one)
Camp Takota
In a World

creepy:

Darknet
The Ward
The Stepford Wives

classic:

Bonnie and Clyde
Batman
Batman Returns

TV shows:

The Twilight Zone
Sons of Tuscon
Psych
Adventure Time

other:

In Your Eyes
American Mary
Neverwas

I would recommend all of these movies and television shows.  My favorite was probably American Mary (Trigger Warning:  This movie contains content about sexual assault and/or violence which may be triggering to survivors.)

via
Playing:

Super Mario World for N64 (this is one of  my favorite video games, read about some of my other favorite video games in this post)

Super Smash Bros. for N64

Mario Kart for N64

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for SNES
- I just beat the Desert Palace, which my boyfriend has never beat, so he thinks I'm the coolest girlfriend ever.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest for SNES

Reading:

Ticktock by Dean Koontz

Gideon's Corpse by Preston and Child

Darkfall by Dean Koontz

Contact by Carl Sagan

Deception Point by Dan Brown

Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz

I loved all of these books but Deception Point was definitely my favorite.  I highly recommend it!

What have you been watching, playing, and reading lately?  Feel free to use this post idea on your own blog.

Qwertee is an Amazing Company!

Get ready to scroll because there are some pictures on this post.

I discovered Qwertee a few months ago.  It's a pretty cool online shirt seller.  They have a design each day and it's available for purchase for the next 24 hours.  Each shirt costs just $12 and they're all super cool and nerdy.  But I didn't buy one until I found the absolute perfect one, because $12 is not much for a tee shirt, but I didn't actually need any more shirts and also I shop at thrift stores so my shirts usually cost 50 cents to 5 dollars.  But this shirt was too amazing not to pass up.  I watch Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.  I'm not ashamed.  It's a great show.  And you should know by now that I love every single thing Tim Burton makes (aside from Sweeney Todd).  So I bought this shirt because it's amazing, they still had it in my size, and because it's black and white, which goes with just about everything ever.  By the way, I bought this shirt with my own money and was in no way compensated for blogging about the company.  I just adore them and want everyone to know how awesome they are.  I got my shirt in the mail way sooner than I thought I would, especially since I paid standard shipping and it came all the way from Ireland.   I was super surprised when I opened my package and found not only my shirt but some candy that I could actually eat!  I have celiac disease and thus cannot eat anything with gluten in it.  This candy was gluten free, dairy free, and I think soy free, so pretty much anyone who is not diabetic can eat it.  Also there was a robot picture on the package, which I immediately cut out and attached to my ever-expanding wall o' art, which I'll share soon.  It's worth the wait.

The shirt fit me perfectly.  It's true to size.  It's also very comfortable quality fabric.  The printing is done well.  The only thing that would make me love this shirt more is if it was glow-in-the-dark.  But seriously, I have worn this shirt at least four times in the two weeks I've had it.  Pictured above are two of those times, the day I received it in the mail and yesterday.

I didn't even realize until I was editing these photos that I wore it with my combat boots both times.  I love those boots.  So in the first set of photos, I am wearing the Qwertee shirt plus my free hat, a dress from my favorite thrift store (which I think cost me just $2), jeans from Crossroads Trading Co., studded combat boots from Crossroads Trading Co., and a bracelet that I made.  I was going for a layered look because Seattle has been cooler (temperature-wise) in the mornings and then heat-wavey in the afternoons.

In the second set of photos, I am wearing the Qwertee shirt plus the combat boots, amazing floral pants (I won't tell you where I got them from yet because I'm saving that for another post, but I will tell you that they cost just $5 brand new!), and a thrifted Topshop belt.  People seemed to like this look a lot more than the first one.  My boss told me she liked my outfit, and she rarely gives compliments, some random frat-looking guy said my pants were cool, and a guy around my age tried to sell me a single old beat-up shoe for $1 and then sang "You're Beautiful" to me as I walked away, so obviously this outfit is pretty great.  I think it's a really good mix of girly and punk (or hippie punk as G calls it).  Most importantly this outfit just feels like me.

So you guys should all definitely check out Qwertee if you're into cool nerdy tee shirts for low prices.  +Qwertee also gives away a lot of free shirts to people who follow them on social media and/or sign up for their weekly newsletter.  All of the information about that is in the right sidebar on their site.

Have a fun weekend and be sure to join me again next week to read the tale of how I once commanded an army of goose minions.

Blog and Shop of the Month: Silly and Adorable

My Blog of the Month for this month is someone who I've been following for probably over a year.  She's a super cool girl, who has lots of mental and physical strength.  She blogs about her life, which includes web design and circus performing.  I love her fashion sense.  One of the things I love about her is that although she has a fairly large blog following she still takes the time to get to know her readers and answer their questions.  If you haven't guessed by now, I'm talking about Sarah from SillyGrrl.  She's one of my favorite bloggers.  She also just released an e-book filled with coding and design tips for bloggers.  She's an all-around super awesome person who you should get to know, if you haven't yet.

I discovered this month's Shop of the Month through Pinterest.  (Have I mentioned how much I love Pinterest?!)  She makes super awesome nerdy products that I love.  The Pac Man purse drew me in and the Zelda purses, Chain Chomp purse, and zombie purse (with blood spatter bow!) kept me there.  And she has 74 sales, which is higher than 50, but I make the rules here and I can break them if I want to!  Jen is the cool lady behind Disturbingly Adorable.  She makes and sells nerdy (and other awesome) purses, pouches, scarves, shirts, jewelry, and underwear.  And fellow Whovians, there's a purse featuring the cutest Dr. Who alien ever!  And besides being amazing, all of the Disturbingly Adorable products are very reasonably priced.  Plus, how great is that name?!  I love it.  Seriously.

So go check out these ladies are their great work, because they're really cool and they do great work.

Introducing Nerdish Delight!

Welcome to the first Nerdish Delight post ever!  What is Nerdish Delight?  It's a post where I share some of the nerdy things that I've found around the internet lately that I find delightful.  These things include, but are not limited to: webcomics, video games, technology/gadgets, and science.

I adore the game Coma on Kongregate, by Thomas Brush AKA wittyhobos.  It is a point-and-click game, which is my absolute favorite kind of game ever.  It is not a difficult game.  That isn't the point.  It's beautiful and artistic and slightly creepy.  I also really like that the game doesn't just tell you outright what it means, but lets you draw your own conclusions.  I feel like that's something all good art does.

The Hubble telescope found a galaxy that supposedly looks like a Space Invader.  I think it looks more like a skull with glowing eyes.  To me, it would look like a Space Invader it it had the antennas and longer arms.  Nice try, galaxy, nice try.

A man had 75 percent of his skull replaced with a 3D-printed piece!  This makes me ask so many questions, but the first one is, 'How?!'  75 percent is a lot of a person's skull.  And skulls have eyes and noses and lips and ears on them.  I just don't even know how they did it.  I have always thought that 3-D printing was really cool, but I never even thought about something like this as a possible application.  It's super cool, but I wish that the article was more elaborate.

Here is a cool gadget in the world of 3D printing.  It's the first ever 3D printing pen.  It is by far the most affordable way to print in 3D.  The Kickstarter campaign for it still has 13 days left and over 2 million dollars has already been pledged, which is well over the $30,000 goal.  This thing is just cool.  I can't wait to see what amazing creations people make with it.  It works in a similar way to a hot glue gun.  You put in plastic and the pen heats and extrudes it.  The plastic cools so fast that you can actually draw in the air!  It kind of reminds me of that episode of Spongebob Squarepants with the magic pencil, only the drawings don't magically come to life and attack people.

And last, but certainly not least, is Codecademy, which I discovered through one of the people I follow on Google+.  I've been meaning to learn CSS and refresh my HTML knowledge for quite a long time.  I had found a few different sites that offered free online courses, but none of them that I really loved.  Enter Codecademy.  First of all, you earn badges when you complete lessons, and I am instantly drawn into any site that lets me earn badges.  (See Kongregate.)  They have lessons in CSS, HTML, PHP, jQuery, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, and APIs.  I can't really comment on the other lessons because I haven't done them, but the HTML and CSS lessons are really good for beginners.  I completed the HTML lessons last week.  It was really interesting to learn about lots of basics that I was never taught and also some basics that I was taught incorrectly.  I have moved onto the CSS lessons, which are new to me entirely.  I have been picking up CSS really quickly and I wish I had learned it earlier.  Each Codecademy lesson is made up of a number of exercises based around a concept, such as tables.  The first exercises teaches you the absolute basics, including any new syntax, and tells you exactly what to type and where to type it.  The following exercises do the same thing, with more advanced steps and less guidance until you can do it by yourself.  If you can't remember how to do something, you can go back to the exercise that taught you how to do it, or you can look at the hint.  It's a really great free resource for coders and programmers.

The Nerdiest Conversation Ever

Today there were a lot of student presentations in my Finnish class.  One of them was on a Star Trek parody called Star Wreck, but that wasn't what led to the nerdiest conversation ever.  What led to the nerdiest conversation ever was our discussion on comment elements in stories.  We began an intense discussion of the similarities between Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.  One of the highlights of the conversation was "Gandalf isn't a temptress!" Also, we discovered that Gandalf=Hagrid.  So that's really all I have to say. I have to write a paper that's due tomorrow.

So I was reading one of Gnetch's older posts about a girl who uses the :/ emoticon at the end of every single sentence and now I have a fantastic idea for tomorrow's post. (If I remember tomorrow, I'll link that to her blog. It's a great read.) I am going to take pictures of my interpretation of different emoticons. It should be fun. You know what I really hate? When people feel the need to end every single sentence with lol. It's not punctuation! And now to go finish that paper.
