Some Things

Thing One: I had a yard sale yesterday and the day before.  I did pretty well and sold most of the stuff I wanted to sell.  But on Saturday, it was very windy and later very rainy.  I had prepared for this by tying a tarp to some trees so I could move everything under if (when) it started raining.  So I had moved everything under including my chair and myself.  I was sitting there reading and the next thing I knew there was a branch with a corner of the tarp tied to it laying next to me and my head hurt really bad.  I stood up and almost fell back down from dizziness.  I called G and he helped me get inside and then moved all of my stuff back inside while I puked. Twice.  All signs pointed to a minor concussion.  He looked at the tree branch and figured out that it broke over my head.  I had blacked out so I don't know if it just hit my head or also hit my neck, but my neck has hurt like crazy and I have been icing it.  I have had two previous neck injuries so I probably re-aggravated one.  I refused to let G call me an ambulance or take me to the emergency room because I was sure that I wasn't going to die and I don't have money for such frivolities unless I'm dying.  He insisted on having me at his apartment where he could watch me.  He also insisted on not letting me go to bed until midnight (I had gotten up super early that morning for the yard sale and was tired before the concussion, but people with concussions can go into comas if they fall asleep.)  After he did let me go to sleep, he woke me up to check on me a bunch during the night.  I love that he's so concerned, but I did not get a good night's sleep.

Thing Two: I am moving.  I thought it would be fine to move my stuff out on July 1st, but I just found out that I need it out by the 30th.  Which means that I need to pack everything and bring it to G's tonight.  And lifting things makes my neck hurt worse, so definitely big fun.

Thing Three: I am abandoning you, my lovely readers, until next Sunday.  Tomorrow my parents are coming to get me and take me back to their place.  My brother just graduated from Marines Humvee training and he is allowed one week of leave before being sent to Japan for two years.  So I definitely want to see him before he leaves.  I will be hanging out with my family and not blogging, but I have temporarily placed an archive list for my blog in the sidebar, in case you miss me too much and want to go back and read some of my old posts.

Friday Fashion: More Magazineness

This thing is going to be a weekly-ish feature now.  I have some free digital magazine subscriptions that I've been reading lately and saving some of my favorite pictures from them.  Some of these pictures are great and some are significantly less than great.  So here's the first two, both from Elle.

Am I the only one that thinks this looks really really bad?
It's like colorful raccoon eye mask disease.

Can we just talk about this for one second?
First, as an ad, I think it fails since I don't even look at the clothes at all.
The first thing I notice is that those are the biggest earrings ever.
I honestly have no idea how her ears aren't falling off.
Probably witchcraft.
The second thing is, why is there just a random basketball?!
Neither one of these people are dressed for shooting hoops.

So that's all. It's sort of a mini one because I have last-minute yard sale stuff to attend to.

Non-Instagram Photos

I mentioned this on Twitter the other day and nobody has murdered me yet, so I thought I'd press my luck by mentioning it on here.  I hate Instagram.  It's not just because my phone is not even remotely capable of having it.  It's because I find the filters annoying and unnecessary, and very overused.  So there you go.  Please don't unfollow me.  I am a huge fan of recording awesome/pretty things in your daily life through photos.  I however, am not a huge fan or even remotely a fan at all, of you taking a picture of every Starbucks beverage you ever have/every pretty baked good you ever eat.  I get it, you like Starbucks and baked goods (especially macarons).  You also have a pet.  That's fantastic that you have a pet, but you don't need to take literally one hundred pictures of it every single day. It's like pictures of a baby; it's only constantly adorable to you and maybe some people who know it personally.  So that's just my two cents. I'm not internet famous so I certainly don't think I can change your personal habits because of my opinions.  With that being said, here are some pictures from my life lately, taken with my real camera.

cute hairstyle I found somewhere on the interwebz and actually managed to copy
just put your hair in a ponytail, separate into two strands, and tie in a knot.
If your hair is really long like mine, you can tie a second knot underneath the first.
Then just secure the ends with pins and your hair will look super fancy.
Huskies/Lakers colored shot thing I made up for G.
Purple gummy butterflies are super manly and sports related.
I still have difficulties with eyeliner, but one day I made spirals instead of cat eyes and it made my whole day more fun.
G and I watched this gorgeous sunset from right outside his apartment the other night.
G's mom is awesome and she got him donuts.  G is awesome and knows how ginormous my sweet tooth is, so he shared them with me : )
altered my dress just slightly by stitching the middle part of the top
down to make a sweetheart neckline; it looks so much better on me now
new shoes which, thanks to Payless' Buy One Get One Free sale, only cost me about $15 each

fresh strawberries and cilantro are colors that just look so pretty together

I'm so Emotional

The other day I took a break from shooting my KROD video and preparing for my yard sale, and I did a silly photo shoot. Feel free to make up your own captions.  Also feel free to share those captions in the comments : )

Tomorrow, I'll share some more pictures in a short post, but don't worry, none of them are of my face.  There is one of my eyes though, so sue me.  But don't actually sue me, because I don't have a lot of money.

Best Website Error Page Ever? Perhaps

will be right back.

Hi there. So the thing is... it may take our servers a couple of minutes to finish updating. We
put this text here to keep you entertained, but we don't recommend reading it. Honestly, there's
nothing of any value written here. How about you take your two minutes to go make a cup of tea
instead? Go ahead. You won't miss anything...
No? No tea? Are you sure? It has plenty of antioxidants. Very good for you...
OK, fine. Maybe take this time to call your grandmother and tell her you love her? It would mean
so much to her... Still reading, eh? Well, I'm sure Grammy will forgive you.
How about that weather, eh?
You need to stop reading this. Think of all the things you could do with this time. Have you paid
your phone bill yet? You could, you know. Two minutes is a surprisingly long time. Well, I
guess you would know that, wouldn't you? You're still reading this.
Wow. You made it all the way to the last paragraph! Told you there wasn't anything worth your
time here. Maybe you'll listen to us next time. It's OK. We still love you. We have that in
common with your grandma.
(try refreshing the page now)

Seriously people, do yourselves a favor and check out wanelo.  "Wanelo" is a sort of combined abbreviation for "want need love"  It's like Pinterest for shopping with lots of really small businesses with amazing products.  Go take a gander.  You won't be sorry.  And I swear they didn't pay me to write this.  I just love the site.

And the Winner Is...

Katrin!  who said "The green necklace is so beautiful! And your blog is gorgeous!"  I used random.org, so I swear she didn't win because she said my blog was gorgeous.  Katrin, send me your mailing address at jaythejedi(at)live(dot)com, and I'll mail you your prize.  And let me know if you still want the green necklace or if you changed your mind and want to pick something else.

And to those of you who didn't win, stay tuned for an opportunity to have one of the other prizes to feature in an outfit post or give away on your own blog.

Karaoke Ring of Death Summer Videos

I sing karaoke now, so get used to that because this was so fun that I will definitely be doing it again.  This month the theme was songs with the word "summer" in them.  I'm hosting the lovely Liz from Joyful Calamity, who sings Bus Stop by The Hollies while having her elbow licked by her dog.

You can see and hear me sing The Bird and the Worm (which says the word summer only once but it counts) with bloopers over at One Red Wall.  And for the master list of this month's karaokeers (it's a word!), head over here.

And make sure you check back later today to see if you won my handmade jewelry giveaway!

This is Way Too Good To Not Share

I receive lots of spam emails saying that my email address won the British lottery or some random person died and the relatives want to give me the inheritance or whatever, but I think that this spam email takes the cake:

Director, F.B.I."

So first of all, they're pretending to be the director of the FBI.  They even included the address so it's obvious that this is legit.  Because nobody could ever just type the FBI director's name (I'm just assuming, I didn't care to look up if that's actually the FBI director's name) and address of the FBI.  Past that, they seem to be assuming that I fell for an email scam about either "contract payments, fund inheritance or lottery winnings".  I am pretty good at spotting those as scams.  Furthermore I don't have a Bank of America account.  But the last sentence is what really does it for me: "We presumed you are law abiding and would not scuffle with the authorities in and outside America."  They really said scuffle!  I do love a good scuffle with authority.  I'm pretty sure that the real FBI would use a more professional word, but what do I know? I'm just a naive, email-scam-falling-for, accidental-law-breaking civilian.  I better get on this so I don't get arrested within the next 72 hours. Haha, just kidding.  Nice touch though, trying to make me think I'll be arrested if I don't let you scam me. Good luck with that.

I Read Fashion Magazines for the Laughs

First watch this video to learn how to properly read a fashion magazine.

Now that you've learned how to read a fashion magazine, you can see the humor for yourself!  Here are just a few funny things I've spotted in various fashion magazines (mostly Elle and Lucky).  Now don't get me wrong, there are some cute things and helpful tips in these magazines too, but I mostly read them for the laughs.

-Wearing pastel makes you a rockstar.  I'm sorry, Lucky magazine, but no matter how many times you say this, it will never be true.  Wearing pastel makes you girly or a fairy princess, or if you're a male it makes you confident in your masculinity, but it does not make you a rockstar.

-Apparently if models wore shirts under their jackets or blazers in advertisements, it would be way too distracting from the product being sold.  Everybody would wonder, are they trying to sell me this shirt or that bottle of perfume hovering in the middle of the photo?

-Sometimes models get in trouble and they have to cut their hair super short, but not in a cute way, in a way that looks completely terrible.

-Lots of times models have to wear super ugly clothing, but it's okay because they get paid lots of money for it.  And then fashion magazines use those pictures to convince the unsuspecting public that those ugly outfits are really fashionable.  Well I'm not buying it, either literally or figuratively.

There's lots more but I have to go to the U District and finally buy "new" (aka thrifted but still in like new condition) shoes because mine literally ripped when I put them on yesterday.  Happy weekend, you lovely people, you.

We All Scream (Again)

Who has two thumbs, loves puns, and obviously doesn't own a tablet? This girl.

It's ice cream review time again.  I have learned that Ben and Jerry's mostly puts way too many goodies in their ice cream for my taste.  The first ice cream I'm reviewing today is Ben and Jerry's Everything But the.  The premise for this flavor is that it has a little bit of just about everything.  You can think of it as a kid at a sundae bar putting as much stuff as possible in his ice cream.  It was an alright flavor.  It had waaaaay too many goodies in it for my preference.  Also there were really big pieces of some of the goodies that were difficult to break into bite size pieces because they were frozen.  I would not get this flavor again.  I also tried Ben and Jerry's What a Cluster.  This flavor has caramel clusters and marshmallow swirl.  I found that the caramel clusters did not taste like caramel and they also had a weird texture.  I couldn't taste the marshmallow swirl at all.  I would not buy this flavor again either.  The flavor that I was super duper excited about was Red Velvet Cake.  It was so delicious and I have bought it again since.  The ice cream itself is red velvet flavored and it has actual red velvet cake pieces in it, with cream cheese frosting swirls.  It is every bit as delicious as it sounds.  The other flavor I recently tried is Ben and Jerry's Boston Creme Pie.  This flavor is also really delicious.  This is another less complicated and cluttered flavor.  It has Boston Creme Pie flavored ice cream with yellow cake pieces, chocolate pieces, and pastry cream swirls.  It's basically like eating a delicious pastry in ice cream form and I will buy it again in the future.  So that should get you by for now on your ice cream flavor purchases.  I'll be back with more ice cream reviews sometime again in the future.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  I won't be blogging after Monday, June 25th until next month.  I am going to be visiting my family, including my brother who is being deployed to Japan for two years after this visit.  I will also be moving at the end of this month to a teeny tiny room that doesn't even have a closet.  I'm sure I could find something better, but I just like knowing for sure where I'll be after I move out, so I'm signing the lease today.  For these reasons, I am shortening my giveaway to end June 18th, so make sure you enter before it's over.

What's Going on Here?

This post is an update at the current point I'm at in my life. There will be no pictures. I'll try to keep it short.  I'm currently still searching for a job and place to live. The attic room seems out of reach since the girl who has it now no longer responds to my texts or emails.  I looked at another room nearby last week, but someone else put down the deposit to secure it as their own.  Today I am looking at a room in the University District.  And when I say room, I'm talking about basically a dorm room type situation, but it's in a big house.  Everyone has their own bedroom with a lockable door, and bathrooms and kitchens are shared.  It's within my price range and will force me to socialize so we'll see.  I also like being prepared, which includes wanting to know where I'll be going after I move out of my current place at the end of this month.  Of course, I can always stay at G's for a while if I don't find a place before I have to move out.  In happier and less stressful news, I made two Etsy sales in the last three days.  This is very exciting for me.  I have made the decision to forgo shipping Etsy sales in handmade envelopes for now anyway.  It looks nice, but it is very time-consuming.  Also G is paying me for the help I gave him yesterday with his work thing, which is much appreciated.  My parents will be picking me up for a weekend at the end of this month because my brother will be back home after graduating his Marines Humvee training in Missouri.  I want to be able to see him for a little bit before he goes away to Japan for two years.  It will be good to see my parents too.  I haven't seen them for quite a while.

Oh and in other, not-so-fun news, this is the week I have to call DSHS to do a mid year food stamps interview.  They are as difficult to get ahold of as ever because they still don't have a system of putting people on hold until a person is available to talk to them.  At least G and my parents both just bought me more phone minutes, so I have just under 900.  I hope your lives are all going well and less stressful than mine.

Remember to enter my giveaway to win some jewelry I made, and use code GIVEAWAY10 to get 10% off an Etsy purchase from my shop.

I'll Be Here Tomorrow

Sorry, I can't write a proper post today, because I am helping G with a thing he has to have finished by tomorrow morning for work.  I will post tomorrow though. In the meantime, look at this cool thing I made.  Click it to go to a magical land where you can buy my art as prints, cards, and cell phone cases.

Food Friday: Oven Smores

Today I am forgoing fashion entirely and discussing food.  Don't fret though, I have a pretty cool fashion post planned for next week.  I found this recipe on Pinterest and immediately had to try it.  There are a few reasons why I had to try it: I have the biggest sweet tooth ever, CHOCOLATE, lately I've accidentally been buying lots of smore-flavored things, and lastly it looked super simple.  The recipe over there is easy to follow and I did follow it, but there are some things I would change next time.  And by that, I mean there are some things that I did change, because I already made them again.  The first time I made them was last weekend.  Get ready for gratuitous food shots of every single step.  But be warned, if you are the type of person who likes their marshmallows black on the outside, this recipe is not for you, because everything will be burnt to a crisp if you do that.  Also, G insists that they're called shmores.  I'm not sure where the sh comes from and he won't tell me (because I laughed at his pronunciation).  My guess is from the sh in marshmallow.

This step could go pretty fast if you don't have OCD. G wanted to unperfectize
it but I told him it had to be nice for pictures for my blog, so he left it alone.

Look how wonderfully toasty the marshmallows are after just under 5 minutes in the oven!

smush them together; Jersey Shore made that word so dirty
Stir the melting chocolate like your hand is a tornado!

Dip them all in chocolate and put them right on the plate because you don't have wax paper.

After two are eaten, realize that it looks like a person. Maybe you should have bought wax paper.
Look at all that wasted chocolate, which I may or not have scraped off later with a fork and eaten.

So if you are going to do the dipping in chocolate step, definitely use wax paper.  I actually skipped that step entirely the second time because when you refrigerate them for the chocolate to set up, the marshmallows get all hard and weird.  Plus you have to wait longer until you can eat them.  Both G, who has no sweet tooth, and I enjoyed these immensely.  He even asked me to make them for him again, which I happily did.  This is super duper simple and quick to do, especially if you don't dip them in chocolate at the end.  Plus your house will smell like toasted marshmallows for a while, which is always a good thing, in my opinion.  Happy eating and happy weekend.

Linking up here.

Jobs I Wish I Could Have

In the midst of applying for a ton of different jobs, some of which are kind of awesome (I seriously want to work at Marshall's!) and some that are not so great (7-11 cashier), I have found myself wishing for other jobs entirely.  Some of these jobs might not even exist, but I still want them anyway. So behold, a list of things that I wish someone would pay me to do!

1. Be a hacky sack extra: If you pay attention when watching any movie (or tv show) ever that has involved a college or high school, you will notice they all have one thing in common.  There will be people hacky sacking at some point in the movie (or tv show).  They are usually kind of terrible at it too.  I could be that hacky sack extra! And I'm also pretty good at keeping it up for a while. (Get your mind out of the gutter.)  Sure people might be a little distracted from the actual plot development when they notice that there's a female who's pretty awesome at hacky sacking (a very male dominated activity), in the background.  But I could mess up on purpose a few times so I'm not so distracting.  Fun fact: I was president of the hacky sack club at my university during my sophomore year.

You probably think this wasn't me becuase of the pink shoes. Well my art professor decided the shot needed more contrast,
so I borrowed my roommate's pink shoes.  Also skinny jeans are way better for hacky sacking than flared legs.

2. Read books and watch movies: This is something I do all the time anyway, so I wish that someone would pay me for it.  I would review them and everything, which I already do with lots of movies.

3. Give my opinion on every single thing ever: Give me a topic and I'll tell you what I think about it.  If I don't know what the topic actually is, I'll just make something up.  Why won't anyone pay me to do this?  I love talking about my opinion all day long: I love this show, this hot chocolate is awesome, oh no I think I have food poisoning, ginger ale is awesome.  It's a gift, really.

4. Eat ice cream: I am so serious right now. How do I get a job as a new ice cream flavor sampler, because sign me up right now!  I don't think it's any secret that I love my ice cream.  It's also a good source of calcium when I don't drink milk regularly, except on my Lucky Charms.  Just call me a health superhero.

5. Write the sayings on the insides of Sobe caps: This is clearly a job that someone does, and I have a feeling that the person who does this job does not speak English fluently.  I can generate random phrases with the best of them.  (Sidenote: I've had multiple Sobe caps that said "Get Out of There" on them; I don't like it when my beverage tries to frighten me)  So, Sobe cap saying generator person, I take your "fist pump" and raise you a "party rock"  Your move buddy.  Here's one more to think about "YOLO".  (Obviously I wouldn't use YOLO or party rock.  Those are merely sarcastic examples.)

Oh no, it seems that I have written another list with a normal number of items on it. Oh well, I'm going back to bed now.  Who has two thumbs and couldn't fall asleep until 5 in the morning? This girl.

Stuff G Says

Warning: If you have a queasy stomach when you read the word "puke", don't read this.

So yesterday my stomach hurt REAAAAAAALLLY bad, and I tweeted that it felt like an Alien was trying to eat its way out of my stomach.  I went to G's that evening, because he had ginger ale and comfy sweats and I had neither of those things.  He was being so sweet and trying to take care of me.

G: So what do you want me to make you for dinner?
Me: If I eat anything, I will puke but thanks for the offer.
G: No you need to eat something. How about soup?
Me: I will seriously puke no matter what I eat, even soup.
G: Here's some chicken soup. I'll make it for you.
Me: I will puke if I eat chicken soup or anything else.
G: But I love you, and love means no puke.

A little while later:

G: Seriously though, what are we going to have for dinner?
Me: I'm having nothing and you can have whatever you want.
G: WE can have chicken soup for dinner.
Me: I will still puke if I eat anything.
G: We can puke together then.
Me: Um, that's sweet I guess, but I'll pass.

So then I went to bed a little while after that without eating anything and woke this morning and my tummy is mostly all better.

I am Quirky, but so are You

Everyone has things that make them who they are, things that are specifically unique to them, things that might make people think they are crazy.  Here are some of mine.

I love to share recipes on my blog, but they never include measurements or cooking times. When I make up recipes, I never use measurements or cooking times. I only ever measure ingredients when I'm baking because not doing so ends in disaster for me. I like to dance around the kitchen or run back and forth from the chair to the wall while I'm waiting for water to boil, because it is so boring to just stand there and wait.

Sometimes when I blog, I'll use British phrases, though I rarely do in real life. In real life, if I try to do an accent, all I end up doing is making my voice higher pitched and say something specific to the country the accent is supposed to be from. For example,my British accent "Cheerio old chap, let's get tea with the Queen".

I love laughing at my own jokes, no matter how lame they may be. My boyfriend will tell me my joke wasn't funny and I'll reply, "I'm sorry, did you hear how much it made me laugh? I tell jokes to make me laugh, not you." I firmly believe that laughing at my own jokes (or sometimes just at myself) is the secret to my happiness, along with lots and lots of ice cream :) I am very easily entertained and it does not take much to make me laugh, and even less to make me smile.

I love having my nails painted but almost never take time out of my life to paint them.  Sometimes I'll just paint them on one hand, because I always smudge the second hand when I don't wait long enough for them to dry.  I have never gotten a professional manicure or pedicure.  I never painted my toenails until about last year.  I didn't wear makeup until I stopped being able to walk.  I found that it helped my self-esteem and sometimes made people see me as a real person and not just as that girl in the wheelchair.

I love headbanging.  Loud music makes me so motivated.  I was raised on country, but then my brother finally convinced me to listen to Metallica and there was no turning back.  Now I like very few country songs (I find them mostly whiny and complainy which is just depressing)  I love metal, but I also love classic rock, lots of folk, and most indie and alternative.  I also like hip hop now, thanks to G's influence, as well as the fact that he used to play only the same two hip hop CDs over and over in his car until I finally started singing along with parts of them.  Lately I have been dancing all the time, even when there's no music on.  I think it's because lately I've been extra happy, despite the stress of having to find a new job and place to live.

I got the idea for this post from one of my favorite blogs, Wake Up, Lovely.  If you don't read it, you probably should.  She almost always puts me in a positive mood and she has a fantastic blog design/fonts as well (I'm a design nerd.)

this picture is old but I love it, headbanging and air guitar in my pretty dress :)

Friday Fashion: What to Wear to the Post Office

I am sure that some of you have needed to go to the post office.  Maybe you had to mail a letter, or pick up a package, or buy some stamps.  And maybe you wondered, 'What does a stylish lady (or dapper gentleman) such as myself wear to the post office?!' Well fear not. I am here to answer your question.  You are no longer expected to get dressed up in your Sunday Best for a trip to the post office.  It's not like going to the movies or the airport.  You can actually just wear whatever you have on.  I'll just give you a minute while that sinks in.  Has the concept satisfactorily saturated your grey matter? Great, then I can move on.  As I said, you can wear anything you like to the post office.  When you get dressed, just treat it like a trip to the grocery store, meaning you can wear a baseball cap, sweats, a baggy tee shirt, and no makeup.  (Disclaimer: I don't wear that stuff to the grocery store. I'm trying to be somewhat humorous and you're ruining that by making me explain myself.)  Or if you're feeling like looking like you aren't either homeless or a celebrity trying not to be recognized, you can do what I did.  I just thought of the color scheme on air mail envelopes and put together my outfit based on that.  (That's not really true, but I did accidentally use those colors.)  If you aren't aware, air mail envelopes have red and blue diagonal stripes around the borders.  I think it's to say, this mail is patriotic!  I didn't have anything with red and blue diagonal stripes, so I went with a more subtle approach.  I used a blue long sleeved shirt layerd under a dress which had some of the same shade of blue in the pattern, then layered a red coat over the top.  But surely you don't want to here me blather on about that, so just look at the pictures.

You can't tell because I took this picture at night, but my thumbnail has blue and purple glitter on it.
I'll pretend that I did that purpose so it would match my dress.

And as an added bonus, this is the sort of outfit that you should wear to the park, especially if you live in Seattle. The cardigan layer is a must with our weather, which goes from sunny one minute to pouring rain the next.I would really love to wear this outfit, especially the shoes.  I love brightly colored shoes and orange is my favorite color.

And if you want to be oh-so-stylish like me, don't forget to enter my giveaway to win a piece of jewelry that I made.
